Bob Carpenter
Bob Carpenter recently retired as the President and founder of Boston Medical Investors,
Inc., a firm specializing in early-stage health care companies. Established in 1994, the firm
focused on advancing health care technology and generating exceptional returns by
leveraging both capital and intellectual resources from a network of industry executives
and scientists.
Bob’s extensive career began after earning a BS from West Point in 1967, an MS in
Computer Science from Stanford in 1969, and an MBA from Harvard in 1975. He served as
a U.S. Army Signal Corps officer, receiving a Bronze Star and three Army Commendation
Medals. Following his military service, he worked at Baxter Travenol Laboratories,
eventually leading the Fenwal Division, and later founded Integrated Genetics, which went
public and was merged with Genzyme in 1989. Bob served as Executive Vice President at
Genzyme, then left and founded GelTex Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by
Genzyme in 2000. He was a director of Genzyme until 2011.
Bob helped start more than 15 ventures including VacTex that merged with Aquila
Biopharmaceuticals and was later acquired by Antigenics Inc., and Cadent Medical
Corporation, acquired by Cardiac Science, Inc. He also played a key role in founding Hydra
Biosciences, BioSurface Technologies, Somatix, and Good Start Genetics, and he was
Chairman of Peptimmune Inc. until 2007. He served as a Director of Moderna for its first
five years of operation. His current directorships include Aquinnah Pharmaceuticals,
Hydra Biosciences, Immuneering Corporation, and Olaris, Inc.
